Reasons for EVERY pick
Porygon
its a really unique idea, especially for gen 1, its made especially cool by the fact that at the time these kinds of 3d models would have just started appearing in games, so the time period adds to it as well, having to gamble for it is also fun, eevee is tempting but its just a cute design, its not got much more concept into it until it evolves
Magmar
im a fan of Magmar after using one in Crystal but design wise i quite like the flaky bits on its arms, i was tempted to pick vulpix because i love foxes but i think i need to use it in a team first to like it enough
Seadra
There a LOT of really cool and cute water pokemon in gen 1 so this was quite difficult, slowpoke/Slowbro is just fun and its psychic type helps a lot in gen 1, Cloysters cool and garados is fun to use with a cool concept, but i went with kingdra, well its quite silly but i think a big part of it as the flaky bits, and it probably helps that i know it can evolve into a dragon so makes the whole line cooler in retrospect
Paras
Theres a lot of fun grass types in gen 1, exeguttor is fun just by nature of being a gen 1 psychic type making it a lot more signifigant, victreebell is cool, surprisingly powerfull and i have a fondness for it after using it in my first playthrough, and bellsprout captures such a fun energy along with one of the funniest sprites but i went with Paras because of the level of creativity in the concept, taking inspiration from something as weird as mushrrooms that slowly take control over an insects mind is a really special thing for gen 1 since they either tend to be based on folklore or something quite simple like a fish or pile of sludge, so Paras stands out, even if it is abyssmally weak that just makes me feel bad for it, its such a dark concept that i imagibe if Paras was made today it would be a grass ghost type, i hope one day they flesh it out a bit more with an an extra evolution or regional form.
Jolteon
Despite electric being one of my favourite types im not really too interested in the gen 1 electric types, i like magnemite because magnets are cool and zapdos is cool for cultural reasons (having its own area and generally being one of the first legendaries) but none of them really grabbed me, at least until i did my own playthrough through pokemon green, firstly i learned to appreciate the design itself, the cool spikes and silver mane, the sharp small legs and most of all its cool bug eyes (which were sadly lost over the generations even if the eyes still look cool). Secondly having a high speed high critical hit rate electric type in gen 1 was just fun, i probably had the most fun using Jolteon out of any of my pokemon in my playthrough. Lastly it still has that cultural factor, it was in a lot of early pokemon media and so it has a kind of older digital media feel to it still, which if you cant tell by the rest of this website, i like.
Articuno
while i care a bit less about the ice types in gen 1 i still think Cloyster is cool and i like Articuno and Lapras for cultural reasons (like i stated in Jolteons), Lapras is a pretty unique pokemon to get in gen 1, ONLY being obtainable through fighting team rocket in silph co, even then Lapras is still weirdly prominant in pokemon. Despite all that though i think i still prefer Articuno for largely the same reasons as Zapdos, although it does help that its weirdly hard to catch making it quite fun and the puzzles to get it arent crazy but surprisingly complex for gen 1, it was probably my favourite dungeon to go through out of the three.
Polywrath
i have to admit i dont have that strong feelings towards the gen 1 fighting types (even less than the ice types) i kind of like mankey and primeape but i dont have that strong feelings on them. The reason i went with Polywrath is because firstly fighting water is a cool type and secondly i find it quite cool how Polywhirl is the creator of pokemon's favourite pokemon
Victreebell
Given that poisen has the most pokemon out of any type in gen 1 (im pretty sure making up around 20 percent of the dex) i dont have time to go through every one i think is cool, but i would like to give a special mention to Grimer, i like how Grimer is just a funny little guy but another thing that endeared me is the red and green filter you can put on it when using a gameboy advance to play gen 1, Grimer looks really cool with the red and green palette. The reason i picked Victreebell is just because of how much i was endeared to it during my playthrough, like i said in Paras's entry it was just really fun to use
Golem
There are quite a few good ground types in gen 1 (if a bit boring) Onix is obviously very iconic at this point and at the time of release so has the cultural factor but a bit too simple, same for Rydon, marowak and cubone have a fun concept but are a bit too simple design wise, i quite like Sandshrew and Sandlash but theyre pure ground and arent that strong which makes a bit too hard to root for, i went with Golem because the Golem line (geodude the most) has a lot of cultural signifigance (appearing in stuff like starter squad and a bunch of old parody media alongside actual official media)and are some of the most recognisable in the series, also the fact that its a trade evolution which despite being realistically too difficult to achieve, is a really cool and innovate way to interact with a video game even if its easy to forget now how cool it is, also i really like how in gen 1 a lot of the frequent encounters like rattata, geodude and tentacool evolve into quite strong and actually good pokemon
